REGINAL GEOGRAPHY
Central Region (Santiago, Constanza, Jarabacoa)
Cibao or Central Region is a fertile agricultural zone with abundant deposits of gold and other minerals. It is also famous for the unique hospitality of its people and tobacco plantations. The most important city of this region and the second largest of the country is Santiago. History and tradition are portrayed in the monuments and lively Victorian architecture. Jarabacoa and Constanza are well known for the amazing beauty of their terrain, rivers and waterfalls. This region is also home to the highest peak of the Antilles, Pico Duarte, and is certainly the wonderland for adventure.

Southwest Region (Barahona)
The region's most important attraction is the unique Enriquillo Lake, the largest salt water lake in the Caribbean. Its contracting terrain and climate from the lush green of the surrounding Bahoruco mountain chain to the dry ecosystem of the lake itself makes this area a great retreat for nature enthusiasts. Its beautiful mountains, sulfur and sweet water ponds and wildlife including crocodiles and flamingoes are impressive. A panoramic view of this rugged coastline will lead visitors to Barahona, the region's most important town and one of the latest tourist developments.

North Region (Puerto Plata, Samana, Cabarete)
Also called the Amber coast due to its abundant deposits of this fossil resin. Puerto Plata, the largest city of the north, is a tourism Mecca with crystal clear waters from the Atlantic Ocean and protected coral reefs. This area has many historical and cultural attractions dating from the 16th Century as well as lovely Victorian buildings from a latter era. The Amber Museum, the Brugal rum factory and the impressive National Park Mount Isabel de Torres are fascinating sites to explore. Large and small resorts, restaurants, cafes and other facilities are located all along the coastline from Puerto Plata to the famous Playa Dorada Complex and to the charming village of Cabarete, a favorite for adventure lovers. It is also the Windsurfing Mecca of the Caribbean and host of the Professional Windsurfing Association World Cup Competition. At the tip of the northeastern peninsula is the impressive Samana Bay, a village settled by American slaves in the early Eighteen Hundreds. Eighty percent of the Humpback Whale population comes in the winter to mate and vacation in Samana's off shore. The exceptional beauty of this coastline, and the coconut tree covered mountains, make this area a real paradise.

Santo Domingo
The capital of the Dominican Republic was the first city to be established in the New World. The magnificent colonial charm and the architecture of its restored cobblestone streets, buildings and museums are just the beginning of a fascinating journey through five hundred years of history. Proclaimed by UNESCO as "The Cultural Heritage Of The World," this colonial city is the home of "many first" of the Americas. The first cathedral, fort, hospital, monastery and university are just some of the magnificent places to visit. Modern Santo Domingo is an interesting contrast. A cosmopolitan city full of contemporary buildings, outstanding restaurants, shopping malls and a very enthusiastic nightlife transforms the town into a giant party.

Southeast region (Punta Cana, Higuey, La Romana, Juan Dolio, Boca Chica, Bayahibe)
Punta Cana is located on "La Altagracia" province, on the south-eastern portion of the country. La Altagracia is home to two national parks, the famous Punta Cana resort area, and Isla Saona. The capital city is Higuey. Major towns are Nisibon, Punta Cana, San Rafael de Yuma.
The Southeast region comprises the areas of Boca Chica, Juan Dolio, La Romana and Higuey. Boca Chica is a small fishing village with charming restaurants, bars and cafes. Its shallow waters resemble a large swimming pool. Further east is the town of Juan Dolio, famous for its clear and docile Caribbean waters, great resorts, magnificent cuisine and golf course. A few minutes away, eastbound is San Pedro de Macoris. When traveling through this town, visitors view the sugar fields and beautiful countryside scenery before arriving at La Romana, an internationally recognized area. The enchanting Chavon River is the site for Altos de Chavon, a replica of a 16th century artisan village. A short distance from La Romana harbor, is Catalina Island, a jewel by itself. Headed east, within La Romana is the town of Bayahibe, a typical fisherman's village. The exuberant natural beauty of this coastal area is home to The Eastern National Park and the spectacular Saona Island. Higuey is located at the tip of the southeast coast. From Punta Cana to Macao, this is a stretch of the best beaches of the Caribbean Region. Its clear waters, pearl white sand beaches and resorts built around lagoons and ponds make this area a real paradise. Manati Park is an ecological park and a replica of a Taino village, the natural habitat of the native Indians of this island.

National parks

They comprise almost 10% of the land area of the country to help to preserve the diverse Dominican countryside as well as the flora and fauna that are native to the island.
